Penne for your thoughts
Community Service Hours for October: 11 Hrs.
Well guys, it is already the end of October!
Time is honestly going by so quickly, but I guess that’s what happens when you keep busy. This month, I have been spending my Sunday nights at the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine. First off, let me just say how amazing that center is! It’s a group of local chefs who are dedicated to teaching the community how fun/ easy healthy cooking can be. As a volunteer, I help with class preparation, cleanup, and try to help with the teaching process as much as I can. (Plus, I get to learn some cool tricks along the way too!) I have been volunteering with the family group session this cycle and have been lucky enough to work with the same family for several weeks. Watching young kids and their parents get excited about healthy eating/ cooking on their own is inspiring. In the beginning, there was a lot of reluctance about trying new things, but as classes go on everyone has begun to branch out without hesitation. It is a really cool thing to see the progression and to hear reports about how the class is changing their lifestyle at home. It’s hard to remember to slow down sometimes because life can get pretty hectic. Maybe, you are studying for the next set of exams or maybe coordinating multiple kid’s extracurricular activities (cause busy can come in all shapes and sizes). There are always some way to tweak your lifestyle to make it a little more beneficial to you in the long run though. The baby steps can make all the difference and could be as simple as making a healthy, quick meal instead of going through the drive thru. It’s really cool to be a part of something that is giving families the knowledge and motivation to make those little tweaks in their lives.
On another note, classes are still going very well! I have
finally perfected a study routine that works for me, and my stress levels have
definitely gone down because of it! We
are currently in our cardiovascular block, and I would have to say it is
probably one of the most challenging units so far. However, we got to do a patient
stimulation this month, and it was one of the coolest things we have gotten to
do yet! So challenge accepted cardio unit!
